Walmart (NYSE: WMT), the world’s largest retailer, has officially announced plans to open its first branded stores in South Africa later this year. This milestone marks a bold step in expanding Walmart’s presence across the African continent, highlighting its commitment to making high-quality, affordable merchandise more accessible to local consumers.
The move follows Walmart’s inaugural Growth Summit held in April, which brought together suppliers from 12 African countries. The summit showcased innovations and products made, grown, or assembled on the continent, resulting in partnerships with small and medium-sized Africa-based suppliers.

Bringing Every Day Low Prices to South Africa
According to Kath McLay, Walmart International President and CEO, the South African stores will stock a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, technology, and locally sourced products. “By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” she said.
Customers can expect bright, well-designed stores with wide aisles, a diverse range of global and local brands, and Walmart’s signature friendly service.
Omni-Capabilities for a Modern Shopping Experience
Walmart is preparing to integrate digital capabilities into its South African operations, ensuring a seamless omnichannel experience. The first stores are set to open before the end of 2025, with official opening dates expected to be announced in October. Details regarding store locations, hiring, and community initiatives will also be shared in the coming months.
Miles Van Rensburg, Massmart President and CEO, added: “Every rand matters when it comes to price. By balancing quality with our Every Day Low Price philosophy, we’re committed to building trust with customers and offering an exceptional in-store experience.”
Investing in Local Communities
Beyond retail, Walmart has pledged to invest in South African communities. Globally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation focus on creating economic mobility, building sustainable supply chains, and strengthening communities. In South Africa, this includes investments in food security, disaster relief, and support for local entrepreneurs.
The retailer also plans to create local workforce opportunities and contribute to community outreach and sustainability initiatives, driving long-term economic growth.
