A new pan-African campaign launched on Africa Day is challenging Africans to reclaim the narrative about the continent by amplifying stories of innovation, creativity and progress already shaping Africa’s future.
The #NotWaiting campaign, launched by Opportunity Africa alongside partners including African Union, Africa No Filter and Brand Africa, aims to spotlight the people, businesses, communities and ideas driving transformation across the continent and diaspora.
Launched simultaneously across major African cities including Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos and Accra, the initiative seeks to counter persistent narratives that continue to frame Africa primarily through the lens of crisis, instability and limitation.
Instead, the movement positions Africa as a continent already in motion.
A Continent Building Its Future

At the heart of the campaign is the belief that the way Africans see themselves influences how the world sees Africa.
Across the continent, entrepreneurs are building globally competitive companies, creators are influencing global culture, and communities are driving local innovation at unprecedented levels. Yet many of these stories struggle to gain mainstream visibility internationally — and sometimes even within Africa itself.
Opportunity Africa says #NotWaiting is designed to change that dynamic by encouraging Africans to actively share and celebrate stories of progress.
The campaign invites people to post stories, initiatives and individuals they believe deserve greater visibility using the hashtag #NotWaiting. Participants can also sign the campaign manifesto and contribute stories through Not Waiting Africa.
Importantly, the initiative will not be limited to Africa Day. Organisers say the campaign will return on the 25th of every month, creating a recurring digital movement focused on amplifying African excellence, opportunity and innovation.
Reframing Africa’s Global Image
According to campaign partners, the movement is not about isolated success stories, but about recognising a broader pattern of transformation taking place across the continent.
Faith Adhiambo, Senior Communication Officer for Agenda 2063 at the African Union, speaking on behalf of AU Director of Communication Leslie Richer, described the campaign as reflective of a generation redefining Africa on its own terms.
“Africa Day has always represented belief in Africa’s future and pride in Africa’s identity. #NotWaiting captures the energy of a generation that is no longer waiting to be seen, validated or defined by others,” she said.
Moky Makura said the initiative is ultimately about shifting perceptions internally before externally.
“#NotWaiting is about making our stories more visible to Africans first. Because if we begin to look at ourselves differently, the world will see us differently too,” she said.
Meanwhile, Thebe Ikalafeng said Africa’s long-term confidence depends on changing the narratives that dominate public perception.
“Africa cannot build confidently while constantly reflecting itself through narratives of deficiency,” he said. “#NotWaiting is a statement of confidence from a continent already in motion.”
Building an Opportunity-Led Narrative
Opportunity Africa describes itself as a pan-African movement focused on highlighting the people, businesses and initiatives moving the continent forward. Convened by Africa No Filter and Brand Africa alongside partners including the African Union, the initiative aims to unite creators, institutions, brands and communities around a more opportunity-led story of Africa.
The campaign launch comes amid growing conversations around Africa’s global image, representation and soft power, particularly as the continent’s creative, entrepreneurial and technology sectors continue to gain international recognition.
With #NotWaiting, organisers hope Africans themselves become the primary drivers of that narrative shift.
