In case you’ve missed it, First National Bank (FNB) has expanded its e-Wallet service to WhatsApp.
In a country where messaging apps are often more accessible than traditional banking platforms, financial services are increasingly moving into spaces consumers already occupy.
FNB is the latest to follow this trend, extending its e-Wallet service to WhatsApp, in a move that could reshape how many South Africans first engage with digital financial tools.

Straight from WhatsApp
With this new development, users can now use WhatsApp to access a variety of services, including sending and receiving money, buying prepaid electricity and airtime, withdrawing cash at participating retailers, and making instant payments through PayShap.
First introduced in 2019, an e-Wallet could only be created when an FNB customer sent money to a recipient.
“For over a decade, e-Wallet has enabled millions of South Africans to send and receive money safely and conveniently,” says Lytania Johnson, CEO of FNB Personal Segment.
Now, users can independently register and create their own wallet within minutes through the messaging platform. But why’s this interesting? Well, by leveraging a familiar, low-data channel, the service aims to make digital money management more accessible to people who may be unbanked, underserved or underbanked.
Hailing the new offering Johnson said it would strengthen e-Wallet’s already strong foundation by introducing a more seamless, secure, and intuitive digital wallet for customers who need simple and affordable solutions.

Still a trusted option for digital money transfers
In the past year alone, customers sent over R43 billion via eWallet, with 69 million transactions processed, underscoring its position as one of South Africa’s most trusted digital money transfer solutions.
“Our focus remains on expanding access to safe, modern ways of transacting and lowering barriers to entry into the formal financial system,” she added.
The development also reflects a broader industry trend; financial institutions embedding services within existing digital ecosystems rather than relying solely on standalone banking platforms.
