In a world where corporate responsibility is often just a checkbox, Kellanova South Africa is proving that brand purpose is more than just a slogan. Formerly known as Kellogg’s, the global snacking powerhouse has doubled down on its mission to create “Better Days”,and this World Food Day, they’re doing it with heart, hands, and heaps of nutritious meals.
This year, Kellanova joined forces with South Africa’s National Department of Agriculture in KwaZakhele, Gqeberha, to deliver not just messages of hope but 139,000 meals to vulnerable communities. This act of generosity is not just a once-off celebration but part of a broader commitment to sustainable food access and community upliftment.
Food Insecurity in SA: The Numbers Speak Loudly
According to Statistics South Africa, more than one in five households live with food insecurity. For many families, especially in rural and underserved urban areas, the idea of three daily meals is a luxury.
With a deeply rooted presence in the Eastern Cape since 2014, Kellanova has made school breakfast a daily reality for thousands of learners. Through its Better Days School Feeding Programme, the brand ensures 11,780 children across 15 schools in Gqeberha start their day with a nutritious meal.
Why Breakfast Matters: Fueling Futures
The logic is simple but powerful; hungry kids can’t learn. A child who skips breakfast is a child at risk of falling behind, losing focus, and missing out on their full potential.
“This World Food Day is more than a calendar event, it’s a reminder of our collective responsibility,” says Philip Nieman, General Manager of Kellanova South Africa. “We’re committed to building a South Africa where no child is held back by hunger.”
Beyond Meals: Cultivating Gardens and Empowering Families
In 2024, Kellanova elevated its impact by launching the Better Days School Gardens initiative. These gardens now support five schools, offering fresh, homegrown vegetables to over 4,600 children as part of their lunch.
And it doesn’t stop there. 180 families have received training to grow their own produce at home, promoting long-term food resilience and self-sufficiency.
Millions of Meals, Decades of Impact
Over the past 11 years, the company has donated over 62 million meals across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape. The scale is impressive, but the real magic lies in the brand’s ability to make food personal, meaningful, and transformative.
In 2025 alone, 2.3 million meals have already been distributed to schools in Gqeberha, a testament to Kellanova’s ongoing investment in the next generation.
