Business to Brand Summit: Building Legacies

In a bold move to reshape the future of South African business, the Business to Brand Summit — hosted by Pat on Brands — brought together some of the country’s most forward-thinking entrepreneurs, marketers, communicators, and brand builders.

Branding as an Economic and Cultural Driver

Held at The Capital on the Park in Sandton on 1 August 2025, the summit was more than a conference — it was a call to action. With the theme centred on transforming businesses into purpose-led, high-impact brands that can outlive their founders, the summit challenged attendees to move beyond hustle culture and build with heritage, intention, and legacy in mind.

Opening the summit, Pat Mahlangu, founder of Pat on Brands, didn’t mince his words:

“This summit is about stepping into the arena, not sitting on the sidelines. Too many businesses in South Africa are stuck in survival mode. We’re here to help them see branding, not as a cost or an afterthought, but as an asset. A powerful economic and cultural driver.”

Referencing the latest Brand Africa study, Mahlangu highlighted a concerning insight: only 11% of the most admired brands in Africa are actually made on the continent — the lowest percentage in the 15-year history of the study.

But rather than despair, Mahlangu issued a challenge:

“This statistic should wake us up. Yes, we can see it as doom and gloom, but I choose to see it as an 89% opportunity. The space for us to build brands that Africans admire and support.”

The programme featured a rich lineup of keynote speakers, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, all tailored to demystify branding and position it as a strategic pillar of sustainable growth — especially for SMEs looking to scale.

Topics ranged from:

  • The power of digital storytelling

  • How to measure brand value

  • Building customer-centric business models

  • Branding for legacy and investment attraction

Each session was packed with practical insights and real-world case studies, designed to help founders and marketers move from transactional thinking to long-term brand building.

Powerhouse Speakers & Priceless Insights

In true Pat on Brands fashion, the summit was a celebration of generosity and community. Many of the speakers volunteered their time, sharing the stage not just to inform, but to inspire.

The lineup included:

  • Brand strategists

  • Marketing leads from top-tier local and global companies

  • Entrepreneurs who’ve built admired African brands from the ground up

What made these conversations powerful was not just the content, but the honesty — speakers tackled the real challenges facing local brands today: lack of funding, inconsistent messaging, limited IP protection, and brand invisibility.

Building a Culture of Showing Up

Closing the event, Mahlangu gave thanks to the speakers, delegates, and partners who made the day a success:

“Thank you to every single one of you who showed up. Who said yes when I called and said: ‘This is what I’m thinking.’ You’ve helped make this a movement.”

From meaningful connections to actionable brand strategies, attendees left not only empowered, but committed — to build brands that matter, brands that lead, and brands that last.
