Cruising is steadily moving from niche to mainstream in South Africa, and MSC Cruises’ latest season performance suggests local travellers are increasingly embracing life at sea.
The cruise line has officially wrapped up its 2025/2026 South African season after welcoming more than 85 000 guests onboard the MSC Opera across 37 sailings. The successful season highlights growing demand for travel experiences that combine convenience, entertainment and value in one package.
Launching in November 2025 from Durban’s Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, the season later repositioned to Cape Town for its final sailings, giving travellers from across the country access to regional cruise experiences.

South Africans Are Choosing Convenience-Driven Travel
For MSC Cruises, the latest season reflects a broader shift in how South Africans are approaching holidays. Travellers are increasingly prioritising experiences that minimise planning stress while still offering variety, relaxation and discovery.
According to Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa, the appeal lies in cruising’s all-in-one experience.
“South African travellers continue to prioritise holidays that require effortless planning and still offer variety, entertainment and discovery,” says Volk. “Cruising remains a great holiday option, and we are happy to see more South Africans make this discovery.”
Gauteng Emerges as a Major Cruise Market
One of the season’s biggest insights came from Gauteng, which accounted for the majority of passengers despite being landlocked.
The trend points to a growing appetite among inland travellers looking for alternative holiday experiences that offer both convenience and novelty. For many travellers, cruises are becoming attractive because accommodation, dining, entertainment and transport are bundled into a single experience.
The season also revealed changing traveller demographics, with women making up nearly two-thirds of passengers onboard.
International interest in South African cruise itineraries also remained strong, with travellers from countries including the United States, Germany, Russia, Brazil, China and the United Kingdom joining local sailings.
Regional Destinations Continue to Drive Appeal
Part of cruising’s growing popularity lies in the destinations themselves.
Throughout the season, guests visited regional hotspots including Portuguese Island, Pomene and Maputo in Mozambique, alongside longer itineraries to Mauritius, Réunion and Walvis Bay.
Themed cruises also played a role in enhancing the onboard experience, offering curated entertainment and lifestyle experiences that positioned cruises as more than simply transport between destinations.
Instead, cruise holidays are increasingly being viewed as fully immersive travel experiences.
Cruise Tourism’s Economic Impact Expands
Beyond leisure travel, the cruise sector continues to deliver meaningful economic benefits to South Africa’s tourism ecosystem.
According to the 2024/25 Western Cape Cruise Liner Industry Report, total economic expenditure linked to cruise tourism increased by 32% during the season. The report found that 127 000 cruise passengers contributed R1.99 billion to the economy, up significantly from R1.5 billion in the previous season.
The growth supports a wide network of industries, including hospitality, transport, port operations, suppliers and local tourism experiences.
Volk says the benefits of each cruise season extend far beyond the ships themselves.
“Every cruise season supports a wider tourism ecosystem, from port operations and local suppliers to hospitality, transport and destination experiences. When guests cruise from South Africa, the value is felt on board, on shore and across the communities from which we operate.”
MSC Armonia to Debut in South Africa
Looking ahead, MSC Cruises is already preparing for its next local season with the arrival of the MSC Armonia, which will make its South African debut on 27 November 2026.
Operating from both Durban and Cape Town, the ship will offer a more intimate cruising experience tailored to families, couples and groups of friends.

Guests onboard can expect a mix of wellness, entertainment and family-focused experiences, including the MSC Aurea Spa, live entertainment venues, LEGO® kids’ zones, themed bars, an ocean-view gym and open-air recreational spaces.
With rising local demand, increasing international interest and a growing economic footprint, MSC Cruises’ latest season signals that cruising is becoming an increasingly important part of South Africa’s travel landscape.
