Brand of the Month: Puly’s Cupcakes

A new year always brings about new possibilities and for the first time this year Pat onBrands will be profiling Proudly African brands that are doing remarkable things. This month’s brand of the month is the much loved Puly’s Cupcakes.

Founder: Pulane Mota aka Puly

Age: 27

Area: Johannesburg

Profession: Blogger & Digital Marketer

Pulane Mota

Puly’s Cupcake is definitely a brand to be reckoned with. Puly used social media to build her personal brand. When she announced on Twitter that she had quit her job as a digital marketer to focus on the Puly’s Cupcakes the tweet got Retweeted over 148 000 times which is unheard of for someone who is not on mainstream media on a daily basis. The story of Puly’s Cupcake is an inspirational one. It is for this reason that it is our Brand of the Month.

We caught up with Pulane Mota to share with us some insights on her brand:

How did it all start? Why Cupcakes?

Puly’s Cupcakes started when I was at varsity, back then it was not about making money, I loved baking and wanted everyone around me to taste what I’ve made even if it was not perfect, I did not give up. I sold my cupcakes for R2 when I started out. I knew that I wanted to drop out of varsity and I needed something to fall back on and that was my love for baking.

3. Why the name Puly’s Cupcakes? Why did you decide to name if after yourself?

On social media I am known as PulyBeast, offline when I meet people at events they refer to me as Puly and not Pulane, so I decided to name it Puly’s Cupcakes, so people knew the person behind the brand, so it made it easier for people to relate to my brand because of me.

4. How can people experience your brand?

We will be having pop shops at markets very soon. People need to watch our social pages for exact details. They can also find us online through our social media platforms and email at info@pulyscupcakes.co.za .

5. What are some of the highlights/biggest achievements of Puly’s Cupcakes?

The journey has been filled with many challenges however one of the highs was being called up to do interviews with major media platforms. I’ve done radio interviews with the likes of YFM, Massive Metro, 702 just to name a few. I was also on Real talk with Anele, Espresso to talk about cupcakes which is incredible. It shows that people are loving my work. The biggest achievement of all is when I supplied Cupcakes  at the launch of the new Dimension Data logo.

6. What makes your brand exceptional?

Puly’s Cupcakes are bakers of fun and stylish cupcakes with unusual flavours, our favourite being the oreo and caramel cupcake. Our cupcakes are baked fresh with a twist. As a company we thrive on customer satisfaction and fulfilling the individual needs. We bake to order, according to what you want so you are guaranteed on a personal touch and experience.

We keep our word, our cupcakes are value for money. There is always a little love with every bite.

7. Where do you see your brand in the next 3 years? :

In the next 3 years, I see the brand having its own little cupcake store in Maboneng. Supplying the biggest bakeries/coffee shops with our cupcakes.

8. What advise can you give someone wanting to start their own brand? :

It’s really important to believe in yourself but most importantly believe in your product, stand up for it. Upskill yourself every chance you get and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
