Wits Art Museum Honors Dr. Esther Mahlangu with Landmark Retrospective

Esther Mahlangu is a name that resonates far beyond South Africa and is celebrated for transforming the vibrant patterns of Ndebele art into a universal language.

About Esther Mahlangu

Born on November 11, 1935, in Mpumalanga, she began painting as a child, learning from women in her community who used art to decorate homes. Over the decades, Mahlangu has elevated this tradition, merging cultural heritage with contemporary mediums and collaborating with some of the world’s most iconic brands.

The Retrospective of a Lifetime

In November 2024, Mahlangu’s extraordinary five-decade career will be celebrated in a landmark retrospective at the Wits Art Museum (WAM) in Johannesburg. This exhibition, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, showcases artworks loaned from global collectors and highlights Mahlangu’s impact on contemporary art. Supported by BMW Group South Africa, WAM, and the National Arts Council, the exhibition will open to the public on November 20, 2024, offering an intimate look into Mahlangu’s journey and her enduring legacy.

“When I started painting as a child, I didn’t know it would take me around the world. I just loved to paint, and then I knew I was good,” reflects Dr. Mahlangu.

Revolutionizing the Automotive World

In 1991, Mahlangu made history as the first African and female artist to join BMW’s prestigious Art Car project. She transformed a BMW 525i into a moving canvas, showcasing her bold, geometric patterns that celebrate Ndebele traditions. This milestone collaboration brought her work into the global spotlight. Years later, in 2016, Mahlangu partnered with BMW again, creating custom artwork for the interior trim of a BMW 7 Series sedan. These partnerships highlighted her ability to blend indigenous art with modern design, making her a trailblazer in both art and branding.

Her collaborations didn’t end there. Rolls-Royce invited Mahlangu in 2020 to design a bespoke piece for their Phantom model. Rolls-Royce named it “The Mahlangu,” her artwork was incorporated into the vehicle’s “gallery,” an innovative feature that allows personalized art to be displayed within the car. The project not only elevated her status but also celebrated African culture in the luxury automotive world.

Expanding Into Everyday Products

Mahlangu’s art has also made its way into the daily lives of South Africans through her collaborations with beloved local brands. Her partnership with Freshpak Rooibos tea brought her intricate patterns to tea packaging, making a cultural statement accessible to all. Similarly, Tiger Brands enlisted Mahlangu to design special-edition packaging for Albany bread and Tastic rice, during Heritage Month. These collaborations blended tradition with commerce, offering a unique way to celebrate South Africa’s heritage.

Luxury brands also sought Mahlangu’s unique artistry. Her work appeared on limited-edition bottles for Belvedere Vodka, connecting her vibrant patterns with premium packaging. Additionally, Fiat incorporated her designs into their vehicles, demonstrating her versatility in applying traditional art to unconventional canvases.

Beyond Branding: Art on a Global Stage

Mahlangu’s influence extends beyond commercial ventures. Her works have been displayed in prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian and The British Museum, solidifying her reputation as a global cultural ambassador. She has also collaborated with British Airways, adding her distinctive style to the airline’s design elements, and even ventured into fashion and sportswear, with her patterns appearing on sneakers and bicycles. These endeavors highlight her ability to adapt her traditional Ndebele art to diverse forms while maintaining its cultural integrity.

A Legacy of Excellence

At 89 years old, Mahlangu continues to inspire with her passion for preserving and sharing Ndebele art. Her numerous accolades, including an honorary doctorate and the French Order of Arts and Letters, underscore her contributions to both art and culture. As a global icon, she has proven that traditional art forms can find a place in contemporary settings, reminding the world of the beauty and power of cultural preservation.

Through her collaborations, Dr. Esther Mahlangu has not only enriched brands but also ensured that the vibrancy of Ndebele art reaches new audiences. Her story is one of resilience, creativity, and the enduring relevance of heritage in a rapidly changing world.
