Mahindra delivers its first order to SA rental fleet industry

2018 is turning out to be a milestone year for Mahindra in South Africa.

In May, the brand opened its first assembly facility in South Africa and has since started shipping locally assembled Pik Up models to dealers throughout Southern Africa. In October, Mahindra launched the upgraded KUV100 NXT and XUV500 and celebrated sales growth of over 30% for the previous quarter.

This month, Mahindra notched up another achievement when it signed the first large-vehicle rental deal. As part of the agreement, Mahindra has delivered 100 KUV100 NXT models to six regional rental depots across the country.

“This is the first transaction of its kind for Mahindra South Africa and it’s a significant vote of confidence from one of South Africa’s largest vehicle rental companies. We are delighted that we could deliver all the vehicles on time and look forward to a long relationship with the vehicle rental industry,” says Avinash Bapat, CFO of Mahindra South Africa.

Mahindra has delivered the K6+ version of the KUV100 NXT for its vehicle rental fleet customer. The K6+ KUV100 NXT offers a comprehensive list of features, including steering wheel controls for its in-built audio system, air conditioning, electric windows, ABS brakes, as well as two airbags.

The K6+ model is fitted with Mahindra’s proven 1.2 litre mFalcon engine and a manual five-speed gearbox. The engine delivers 61 kW and 115 Nm of torque.

To continue offering the highest level of professionalism to fleet customers, Mahindra has appointed a dedicated team of fleet support specialists at its head office in Gauteng. It will also support fleet clients through its national network of dealers. Mahindra has over 60 dealers in South Africa and plans to open and expand its network further in 2019.

“Our first large fleet sale follows a thorough vehicle testing process in which we made sure that the KUV100 NXT meets fleet customers’ need for a robust and reliable vehicle that has a low cost of ownership. It is these same qualities that have made the KUV100 NXT such a firm favourite with private buyers,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

Mahindra introduced the new KUV100 NXT in October this year and expanded the range with the inclusion of an entry-level K2+ model. At R2 199 a month on Mahindra’s new Graduate Finance package, the KUV is officially one of South Africa’s most affordable vehicles.

“Compared to other entry-level vehicles, the KUV100 NXT offers great value with its SUV styling, high safety standard and frugal, yet willing 1.2 litre engine. We are very excited about the opportunity to showcase the KUV to more customers through our sales to vehicle rental companies,” says Gupta.

The All-New Mazda3 revealed

The all-new Mazda3 made its world premiere last Thursday at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. The fully redesigned model will be rolled out to global markets in early 2019 however South Africans will have to wait a little longer as the new model is expected to be launched in the second half of 2019.

The all-new Mazda3 adopts a matured Kodo design language that embodies the essence of Japanese aesthetics. While the overall design presents a simple, single form, subtle undulations bring the styling to life through shifting light and reflections that glide over the body surface. The result is a richer and more powerful expression of vitality than that seen in previous Kodo models. Despite sharing the Mazda3 name, the hatchback and sedan models have distinct personalities — the design of the hatchback is dynamic, that of the sedan
elegant.

The all-new Mazda3 adopts Mazda’s new SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architecture, designed to enable people to make the most of their natural sense of balance. The powertrain lineup comprises the latest SKYACTIV-X, SKYACTIV-G and SKYACTIV-D engines, each of which provides smooth, responsive throttle control in any driving situation.
Based on its key philosophy of designing the car around the human being, Mazda has dramatically enhanced the car’s fundamental driving attributes such that accelerating, turning and braking all feel completely natural.
The Mazda3 is a global strategic model that has driven the the company’s growth from both a brand and business perspective. It has delivered Mazda’s renowned driving pleasure to customers all over the world and been a mainstay of global production at key plants.

“The all-new Mazda3 we unveil today begins a new era for Mazda,” said Akira Marumoto, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO. “The next generation of Mazda cars will enhance the value of the car-ownership experience. Though these products, we will further raise Mazda’s brand value and work towards our goal of building ever stronger bonds with customers all over the world.”

#RunWithPat Journey to Lesotho with Mazda

Dalai Lama said, “once a year you need to travel to a place you’ve never been before”. I say once a year you need to run in a foreign land. This past weekend nine members of the #RunWithPat crew drove down to Maseru in Lesotho to take part in the 2018 Maseru City Urban Road Challenge. This was the first time the Johannesburg based crew ran outside South African boarders, never mind a different city..

About the Run

#RunWithPat Crew before the Maseru City Urban Road Challenge

The Maseru City Urban Road Challenge is a half marathon race that was started 3 years ago with the aim of encouraging a running lifestyle and boosting Maseru’s tourism and runners have the option to run 5KM, 10KM or 21KM distance. This year the run attracted over 200 local and foreign runners from neighbouring countries. Five of our runners took on the 21KM challenge which happened to be a 1st for some, while the others took part in the 10KM run. I ran 21KM and it turned out to be my fastest 21KM, having finished it in 1h48. Everyone that ran did well, achieving their personal goals.

About the Drive

Driving down and getting around Lesotho was such a pleasurable experience, all thanks to Mazda South Africa who gave #RunWithPat two cars, namely the new Mazda CX3 and the Mazda 2 (stunning cars I tell you). Although the primary purpose of going to Lesotho was to run, we also took some time to explore Maseru (Lesotho’s capital city) and to visit tourist attraction sites such as Thaba Bosiu.

We learnt a lot about the history of the Basotho nation and King Moshoeshoe. Thaba Bosiu is located about 24 Kilometres outside of Maseru and at the top of the mountain you see King Moshoeshoe I and King Moshoeshoe II graves. Thaba Bosiu also offers breath-taking 360 degree views of the Maseru region and tranquillity as one gets to connect with nature atop the sacred mountain of the Basotho.

The Mazda 2 and the CX3 parked at the Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village

Not only do both cars boast stylish designs but they also produced outstanding performance on the road.

Mazda 2 and the Mazda CX3 parked outside the Basotho Hat

I drove the Mazda CX3 2.0 Individual Auto whilst my running mate, Lebo Matubatuba drove the Mazda 2.
Although the Mazda CX3 was built with the city in mind, it proved to be capable of taking on the country roads. Equipped with the latest SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, this compact SUV provided natural agility coupled with fuel efficiency. The drive to Lesotho was long, however the Cruise Control feature in the car made the drive more pleasurable. There was no need to put the foot down the accelerator to feel that the car was moving as I could just increase the speed of the car at a “click of a button” whilst the Head Up Display (HUD) ensured that I am aware of the speed limit and the speed at which I was at driving at. The automatic air conditioner kept everyone in the car cool whilst the power sliding and tilt glass sunroof enhanced the ambiance in the car. The full leather seats warranted comfort. No one complained about having back pains or cramps from uncomfortable seats. To top it all off, the interior of the car is nothing short of luxury.

Driving to a foreign country can be headache especially if you don’t know your way around. The integrated navigation system helped us get around the city without having to stop and ask people. When we about 40 kilometres from the Maseru Bridge Boarder gate I needed to refill petrol, the navigation system showed me the nearest petrol station.
On our arrival in Lesotho it was blazing hot and we couldn’t sit inside the guest house. So in true Mzansi style, we chilled outside and the Bose sound system with 7 Speakers in the CX3 turned our “chillas” into a party.

Chillas outside the guest house

Lebo drove the Mazda 2 and here’s what she had to say about it…

Lebo with the Mazda 2

The Madza 2 lives up to the saying “dynamite comes in small packages”. I drove the Diesel powered SKYACTIV-D with automatic transmission. Getting into the car, one cannot miss the luxurious leather finishing in this comfortable car. The Mazda 2 model comes with a central touch screen, but I found the rotary commander to be easier to use as it gave me easy control to my music and the navigator without having to take my eyes off the road. The lightweight of the Madza 2 makes the drive light and swift and because this was a long-distance road trip, I was most impressed by the fuel efficiency as we drove all the way to Lesotho on one full tank with no worries of trying to find a petrol station along the way. Safety comes first and the Head Up Display (HUD) kept me in check with the required speed limits, while the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) indicated if there was a car approaching allowing me to safely change lanes. The Mazda 2 is a beauty, on the inside and outside and it sure did move me in the most enjoyable way.

Memories were made and Madza will always be part of the memories of the good times we had.

Mazda definitely gets a Pat!

Pat Onbrands Review: Sony Xperia Xa1

This is the first product review here on PatOnBrands.com and I would like to thank Sony for giving the platform the opportunity to review their mobile phone.

The Sony Xperia XA1 is quite a special device and for a mid-range handset, it is definitely doing the most. The device boasts a 23 MP rear camera and an 8 MP selfie camera; allowing you to take the best snaps in any event. The device also boasts a 5” full HD display screen and a 32 GB RAM, giving its competitors a run for their money.

Look and feel
In South Africa the device only comes in black, however in other parts of the world you can get the device in white, gold and pink. Therefore if you don’t like having a black this might not be the smartphone for you. What I really like about the Experia XA1 is its size, it can fit in your pocket even if you are wearing skinny jeans. It is also quite light, the device weighs 143 grams. The screens size is 5” which they could have made slightly larger, had Sony embedded the “Back, Home and Option” keys on the screen. In that way the device would feel and look bigger. The dedicated camera button on the side of devices is something special from Sony.
Platform
The Sony Xperia XA1 runs on the Android platform, version 7.0 (Nougat) which can be upgraded to Android 8.0 (Oreo) which is the latest Android version.

Battery Life
The battery life of a smartphone is probably one of the most important features I look for. According to Sony, the Xperia XA1 battery should give you up to 603 hours of standby time if you are on a 3G network and up to 10 hours of talk also on a 3G network. This is not impressive considering that other smartphones give you an average of 16 hours of talk time.

Price
To get your hands on the Sony Xperia XA1 you have to part ways with about R6469, depending on the network you are buying it on.

Does the Sony XA1 get a Pat or a Slap?
This is quite a tricky one, because there are many factors to consider. From a camera point of view the Xperia XA1 definitely gets a Pat. However, the battery life and the price point Sony could have done better. Therefore it gets a slap. What are your thoughts? Please leave your comment below, and Also do remember to get in touch with @PatOnBrands on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

Pat on WhatsApp call

A call is a call-is-a-call-is-a-call? but no, to some people it’s not just a call. It depends on the platform from which the call is made. Technological innovations has given people more options to get in touch. More than a decade ago people had limited and expensive ways of communicating. Voice calls and Short Messages Services (SMS) were the most popular methods of keeping in touch. In fact, making calls was so expensive for many people to an extent that former Vodacom employee Nkosana Makate saw the need to invent “Please Call Me”, an invention that generated billions of Rands in revenue for Vodacom, but that’s a topic for another day.

The emergence of 3G technology gave us more options to communicate. We can now make voice calls over the internet also known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), send instant messages (IM) and do video calls. Companies such as Apple, Google and Skype became dominant players in the VoIP space. Today we have WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber, amongst others also playing a formidable role in how we communicate.

All of these platforms provide us with great benefits; firstly it is cheaper to make calls on compared to traditional forms of making calls. Secondly, you don’t need to be connected to a specific network service provider to use and make a call. You can be connected to any Wifi network and still be able to communicate with your loved ones. Lastly, it is convenient to use, you can make voice calls, video calls and send instant messages on the same platform.

If the platforms offer such awesome benefits, the question remains… why is it that some people feel offended when you call them via WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, but would be happy if you call them with your airtime and/or Apple’s FaceTime. The simple and short answer is – the brand. I’ve had people saying that when I call them via WhatsApp it means I don’t take them serious because it is supposedly “free”. Therefore, it means that I don’t value them as much, however on the same token the very same person would be happy to receive a FaceTime call from me. The other day one of my mentors asked me if I ever buy airtime and said to me, he hopes that I don’t call clients with WhatsApp call because I always call him via WhatsApp. How is it that a FaceTime call would be more valuable than a WhatsApp call as both platforms use the same technology – VoIP. Well… FaceTime is a product of Apple – a powerful brand that is known for being exclusive and people loooove exclusivity. Because there are fewer people who use Apple products than other mobile phone manufacturers, Apple users feel special when they connect on Apple to Apple platforms.

On the other hand, some people raise the issue of the quality of WhatsApp’s voice call. They say WhatsApp call usually buffers or sometimes you can’t hear the other person at all. As with the “normal” call, if you are not in an area that has good signal you are bound to experience issues with the quality of the call.

In my view, it shouldn’t matter whether someone calls you via WhatsApp, FaceTime or Facebook because after-all it’s just a call.

Do you like making WhatsApp calls? Or do you know someone who hates it when you call them via WhatsApp? Leave your comments below.

Ford failed the Kuga way

Service and product failures are inevitable in business, irrespective of size and the nature of the business. The most important aspect of service and product failure is the way a brand recovers which ultimately determines how the market perceives it. The strategy that Ford employed to deal with the Ford Kuga saga presents the company as one that is oblivious to effective brand management. David Hagenbuch stated that, “brands can use service failures as an opportunity to build customer relationships”.  When a brand experiences a service or a product catastrophe, it has two options:

  1. Face the problem head-on and find solutions as quick as possible to restore customer confidence or
  2. Simply ignore the problem and put the blame on others while losing customer confidence.

In the case of the Ford Kuga, Ford seem to have chosen option 2 and they will forever go down in history as the company that does not care about the wellbeing of their customers and that does not take responsibility for their actions. The world of risk management and public relations will never forget the Ford Kuga saga and it will be used as a classic example of bad crisis management, after sales service and decision making.

It all started in 2015, Reshall Jimmy (may his soul rest in peace) lost his life after his Ford Kuga burst into flames. Two reports pointed out that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the car. However, Ford denied the allegations and conducted its own investigation which has not yielded any results a year later since the incident. Ford only met with Jimmy’s family in December 2016, which some reports stating that, they (Ford) showed no empathy for the passing of Jimmy. In an interview with SABC news, Ford CEO, Jeff Nemeth said Jimmy’s death should be treated as a separate issue because his death was not as a result of engine failure. Nemeth further admitted that the matter has gotten out hand.

Media reports state that Ford was alerted of the problem by an insurance company but did not act on the reports. It took about 47 more Kugas and summons from the National Consumer Commission before Ford could decide on a recall of the Ford Kuga EcoBoost 1.6 litre produced between 2012 and 2014. The recall affects a total of 4 556 Kugas in South Africa. In North America, Ford recalled over 400 000 units of the Ford Escape – the United States version of the Kuga – due to glitches in the engine.

After the recall announcement, some customers said they do not want their Ford Kugas anymore and are petrified to drive the car. This is a sign that consumers have lost confidence in the Ford brand. According to a Sunday Times report, the Kuga is presently worthless, as most car dealerships refuse to take it as a trade-in. The value of the car has also dropped tremendously, with some dealership valuing the top of the range Ford Kuga at R100 000.

Warren Buffett was famously quoted saying, “it takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to lose it. If you think about it, you will do things differently.” Indeed Ford has undoubtedly lost its reputation through the manner in which they handled the Kuga fiasco. What will be interesting though, would be how Ford continues to perform in the market with their other products, from a market share point of view and how they recover and restore confidence to consumers.

According to Bruce Condit of the Allegiance Capital there are 7 critical steps to crisis management that Ford could have applied:

  1. Have a crisis management plan with clear objectives to protect any individual who may be affected by the crisis. The plan should also contain action to be taken in the event of a crisis.
  2. Identify a spokesperson to ensure that the company speaks with one voice and delivers a clear consistent message to the public, because crisis attracts a media attention.
  3. Be honest and open to help stop rumours and diffuse potential media frenzy.
  4. Keep employees informed to minimize the internal rumour mill that may lead to employees posting false reports on social media and giving customers false information.
  5. Communicate with customers and suppliers regularly. Customers should not learn about the crisis surrounding your brand through the media. The crisis communications plan should contain ways in which customers and suppliers will be updated regularly.
  6. Update early and often. It is better to over-communicate than to allow rumours to fill the void. Establish a social media team that will monitor, post and react to social media posts regarding the crisis.

Ford failed dismally to apply the aforementioned steps or any other crisis management strategy until it was too late. And for this reason, Ford gets a Slap! A slap for poor quality assurance! A slap for poor customer service! A slap for poor crisis management! A slap for ignoring market concerns! A slap for trivialising the death of Reshall Jimmy! A slap for taking their time at the expense of the customer! A slap for ignorance!

Top 5 “Vrr Pha” Brands

Golf R

The trending phrase during the 2015 festive season was “Ziright iGirls” meaning “are the girls okay?”. This phrase was used to make fun of the people who worked too hard to impress girls in social spaces e.g. clubs, social markets and chesa nyamas by buying them expensive drinks. However, this year the wheels have turned and you will hardly hear people using that phrase, because “Vrrr Pha” has taken over this December’s festivities.

For those who do not know what Vrr Pha means, it is a phrase that is used to describe the sound that an engine of modern sports cars make when changing gears. Vrr Pha is often associated with hot hatchbacks that have a direct-shift gearbox (DSG) and dual-clutch automatic transmission. And of course it is not every car that can make the Vrr Pha sound, it takes a certain car brand to produce such a sound. In this post PAT ON BRANDS explores the top 5 car manufacturers that are associated with the Vrr Pha trend.

1. Volkswagen Golf 7 R

Source: VW Website
Source: VW Website

The VW Golf 7 R is a stunner, and commonly perceived as a “panty dropper”. It is also probably the car brand that made the “Vrr Pha” trend popular. If you are looking for “street cred” this is a perfect brand for you. With a starting price point of R583 800, this Vrr Pha will have you turning heads with its sporty looks. It is also without any doubt that the Golf 7 R has the credentials of a hot-hatch. Powered with a 2.0 Litre Turbo charged, 4 cylinder engine peaking at 292 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This four-wheel drive will get you from 0 to 100KM/h within 5.2 seconds making it the fastest Golf ever made. The fuel consumption on this Vrr Pha is 7.1 litres for every 100KM.

2. BMW M140i

m140i
Source: BMW Website

In 2016, BMW changed the name of the BMW M135i to M140i. According to Auto Express, the M140i is the fastest and most powerful 1 series money can buy. It is the only Vrr Pha on the list that has a 3 litre 6 cylinder, turbocharged engine and a rear-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive makes the M140i one of the finest handling hatchbacks in the market. Although, it has 3 litres engine it is still not faster than the Mercedes Benz A45 as it takes 4.6 seconds to get to 100km/h. The BMW M140i has an 8-speed Steptronic transmission that consumes only 7.1 litres of fuel per 100 km. The engine produces 250kw and 500Nm. To drive this Vrr Pha out of the dealership will cost you about R607 000.

3. Mercedes A45 AMG

a45

According to cars.co.za this Vrr Pha is the ultimate hot hatchback. The Mercedes Benz A45 features the most powerful 2 litre turbocharged, four cylinder engine in the world. The 7-speed dual clutch transmission produces 280KW and 475NM torque giving it the ability to reach 100km/h in 4.2 seconds. This makes the A45 AMG the fastest Vrr Pha on the list. However, with that accolade comes higher fuel consumption, with only 7.3 litres giving you 100km. In order to get this hot hatch, unfortunately you will have to go deeper in your pockets as it will set you back R737 314.

4. Audi RS3 Sportback

s3

According to Quattro World the Audi RS3 is more of a “ballistic hatch”. According to Top Gear the Audi RS3 is innocuously-looking, which basically means it lacks the ability to cause any harm. However, the price is quite harmful as it is the most expensive Vrr Pha on the listwhen compared to the Golf R for example. The basic price of the Audi RS3 is a whopping R775 500, which gets you what I call a unique blend of beauty and performance. This Vrr Pha will take you 4.3 seconds to get from 0 to 100km/h with its 2.5 litre turbocharged, 5 cylinder engine. The torque on this beaut is a massive 465Nm and has a horsepower of 270 kW which gives you a top speed of 250KM/h. When it comes to fuels, this Vrr Pha guzzles, 8.1 litres of fuel gives you about 100KM to drive.

5. Ford Focus RS

st

In order level the playing field, we  couldn’t pull out the Ford Focus ST to compare it with the A45s and RS3s of this world. We had to call out its big brother, the Focus RS. Again, the Ford Focus ST is probably one of the hatchbacks that seem to have lost its streets-cred as a Vrr Pha. It doesn’t make that impressive Vrr Pha sound when compared to its counterparts, however according to Cars.co.za it is still a strong contender in the hot hatchback segment. Featuring a 2.3 Ecoboost litre four cylinder turbo engine. The Ford RS produces 257kW and 440Nm which makes the fourth fastest Vrr Pha on the listthe slowest Vrr Pha on the list, with the ability to reach 100 KM/h in 4.7 seconds. The basic price of the Ford Focus RS is R699 900, which is more expensive than the Golf R. The fuel consumption on the Ford Focus RS is 8.1 litres per 100KM which is the same as the Audi RS3.

Conclusion

Each one of the Vrr Pha brands have something unique to offer, from being the fastest, prettiest or most fuel efficient. The choice is completely yours. In terms of price and fuel efficiency the Golf R is a winner which we I believe has to do with why you and the rest of the world has spotted soI see many of them on the road. The Mercedes Benz definitely takes the title of being the fastest. Please let us know what your thoughts are on the Vrr Phas and which one stole your heart by leaving a comment below.
