BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has entered a new era of production, expanding its manufacturing lineup with the latest BMW X3 models. This investment not only secures the plant’s future but also reaffirms BMW’s long-standing commitment to South Africa.

From Uncertainty to Expansion
At one point, the Rosslyn plant faced possible closure, raising concerns about job losses and the future of BMW’s presence in South Africa. However, a renewed focus on innovation and electrification has transformed the facility into a key player in BMW’s global production network.
Rosslyn now produces the BMW X3 30e xDrive, making it the only BMW facility worldwide to manufacture the plug-in hybrid variant. This model is designed for sustainability-conscious consumers, blending performance with improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
New Models Rolling Off the Line
Since January 2025, the plant has been assembling the X3 20i turbocharged petrol and 20d diesel models, catering to traditional combustion engine enthusiasts. In May 2025, it will introduce the X3 40d xDrive, a powerful diesel variant exclusively built at Rosslyn for global markets.
To meet growing demand, BMW has reintroduced a third shift at the plant, increasing daily production to over 330 units across three shifts. The facility now operates 24/7, reinforcing its role as a vital manufacturing hub.
A 50-Year Legacy in South Africa
BMW Rosslyn has been a cornerstone of South Africa’s automotive industry since its establishment in 1973. Over the past five decades, it has produced more than 1.6 million vehicles, evolving into one of the country’s most advanced car manufacturing facilities. BMW has invested R4.2 billion to modernize the Rosslyn plant, focusing on electrification and digitization. This move aligns with BMW’s global sustainability goals while strengthening South Africa’s position in the international automotive market.
Driving South Africa’s Global Automotive Presence
With 90% of its production destined for export, BMW Rosslyn continues to be a key contributor to the country’s economy. The latest expansion ensures that South Africa remains a competitive force in the global automotive industry, reaffirming BMW’s trust in the region’s manufacturing capabilities.
This expansion marks a milestone for both BMW and South Africa, proving that resilience and innovation can turn uncertainty into opportunity.
