The SABC and Telkom have come together to bring us a new online streaming service. The two brands announced on Monday, November 9, 2020, that they have entered a 5-year indenture for a new online streaming service known as TelkomONE. Telkom will house the public broadcaster’s free-to-air radio and TV channels.
TelkomONE
The new service will stream live SABC’s television channels 1,2, Sport and Education as well as all 19 SABC radio stations under the 5-year contract. The service will be available on Android, iOS, and web browsers. TelkomONE will consist of local content as well as international and locally produced exclusive entertainment.
Telkom group’s CEO, Sipho Maseko told news platforms, “We are excited about the opportunity to provide South Africans with free access to watch their favorite SABC content, online, when and wherever they want”.
“TelkomONE will make it possible for subscribers to pause, go back into the program guide (time-shift) and instantly watch a scheduled TV show they may have missed. Telkom is making digital TV functionality available to all”, he said.
The nitty-gritty
The SABC will, however, not be providing its content to Telkom exclusively. In exchange, the SABC will receive a license fee for its presence as well as a percentage of the advertising revenue generated on the TelkomONE platform.
