Sunlight Green Bar Raised by the Bar truck activated at a Durban taxi rank to celebrate 135 years with community storytelling and trader support.

Sunlight Green Bar Launches “Raised by the Bar” to Celebrate 135 Years by Giving Back

Sunlight Green Bar has turned its 135th anniversary into a nationwide community platform with the launch of Raised by the Bar, a travelling activation that brings storytelling, live experiences and practical support to towns and cities across South Africa.

What is “Raised by the Bar”?

Raised by the Bar is a community-first campaign designed to celebrate the people, places and traditions that have shaped both South African daily life and Sunlight’s own heritage. At its heart is a branded truck that moves from city to city, turning everyday spaces—especially taxi ranks—into stages for local stories, performances and small-business support.

The platform positions Sunlight not just as a dish soap brand, but as part of the background rhythm of South African households and informal economies.

How the campaign works

  • Travelling truck activation: The Raised by the Bar truck serves as a mobile hub for events, storytelling and community engagement.

  • Storytelling and live experiences: Communities are invited to share memories, traditions and personal stories that will form a “living archive” of everyday South African life.

  • Support for local traders: The campaign highlights informal traders around taxi ranks, offering selected entrepreneurs practical support to make everyday trading easier.

  • Platform for local talent: Local performers get stages to showcase music, dance and other talents at each stop.

Where and when it’s happening

The national roadshow kicked off in Durban during Women’s Month and is scheduled to visit five provinces. Reported activation dates include:

  • Durban, KwaZulu-Natal – 7 August 2026 (launch)

  • Mthatha, Eastern Cape – 28 August 2026

  • Johannesburg, Gauteng – 4 and 25 September 2026

  • Mbombela, Mpumalanga – 2 October 2026

  • Polokwane, Limpopo – 16 October 2026

Each location adds its own chapter to the campaign’s evolving narrative.

Why taxi ranks matter to the campaign

Sunlight intentionally launched the platform in a Durban taxi rank to reflect how these spaces function as more than transit points. They are described as:

  • Miniature economies where thousands of traders earn a living

  • Social hubs where conversations, business deals and community life unfold daily

  • Representative of the “rhythm of South African life” that Sunlight wants to celebrate and supportmediaupdate+1

By activating in these spaces, the brand places itself directly in the environments where many South Africans live, work and shop.

The bigger brand story

After 135 years in South African homes, Sunlight is using this milestone to shift focus from its own history to the communities that have sustained it. Raised by the Bar is framed as a way to:

    • Turn heritage into community action rather than nostalgia

    • Build a participatory archive of stories from different regions

    • Reinforce Sunlight’s role in “everyday South African life” through tangible support and visibility
