Apple Raises the Bar with iPhone 17 Series and Ultra-Thin iPhone Air

Apple describes the iPhone Air as the “biggest leap ever for iPhone.” Measuring just 5.6mm thick, the device balances durability and elegance with a grade 5 titanium frame and a high-gloss mirror finish.

Apple has launched its iPhone 17 series and the much-anticipated iPhone Air.

Key highlights:

  • 6.5-inch display with Ceramic Shield 2 on both front and back.

  • All-day battery life powered by space-efficient design.

  • 48MP Fusion camera offering multiple focal lengths, including 28mm and 35mm.

  • Powered by the A19 Pro chip, optimised for speed, AI tasks, and efficiency.

  • First iPhone with Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip (N1) and C1X modem.

Available in space black, cloud white, light gold, and sky blue, the iPhone Air starts at $999.

iPhone 17 – A Display Like Never Before

Apple’s base iPhone 17 now features a 6.3-inch display with 120Hz Pro Motion adaptive refresh rate — a first for the entry-level model. The display achieves up to 3,000 nits’ peak brightness and introduces the Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple calls its most durable smartphone glass to date.

Powering the iPhone 17 is the A19 chip, built on advanced 3nm technology. This upgrade supports Pro Motion while boosting Apple Intelligence features.

Camera upgrades include:

  • 48MP Fusion Main Camera with integrated telephoto.

  • 48MP Fusion Ultra-Wide Camera, capturing four times more detail than the previous generation.

Available in black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white, the iPhone 17 starts at $799.

Pushing Performance with Apple’s A19 Chips

At the heart of both devices is Apple’s new A19 chip family:

  • A19 powers the iPhone 17 with a six-core CPU and five-core GPU.

  • A19 Pro drives the iPhone Air, with dynamic caching architecture and Neural Accelerators that triple peak GPU compute — making it ideal for generative AI tasks.

Apple claims the A19 Pro is the fastest chip in any smartphone to date.

Availability and Pricing

Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air began in the US on 9 September 2025, with shipping from 19 September.

  • iPhone 17: From $799, available in five colours.

  • iPhone Air: From $999, available in four colours.

South African pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed by local retailers.

Apple has doubled down on design innovation and performance excellence, with the iPhone Air symbolising the brand’s ability to push boundaries while maintaining premium appeal. For the South African market, the question will be affordability and access — will these devices maintain their aspirational appeal while remaining competitive locally?
