Nedbank Lifts the Silence on Financial Abuse During 16 Days of Activism

In a week where gender-based violence (GBV) dominated conversations online, Nedbank’s latest campaign took a bold and necessary stand against financial abuse, a silent weapon in 99% of abusive relationships. The campaign’s message struck a chord, sparking widespread discussion and inspiring action.

The Hidden Side of GBV

In a world where financial abuse is often overshadowed by physical and emotional violence, its impact is just as devastating. It traps victims in cycles of dependency, making it harder to leave abusive relationships. Common tactics include monitoring and controlling spending, restricting access to funds or income, and taking loans in the victim’s name, which leads to financial ruin.

“While physical and emotional abuse is rightly condemned, financial abuse remains hidden in the shadows—yet it is just as crippling,” says Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank’s Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs.

Nedbank’s campaign sheds light on this issue, offering solutions to empower women to regain control of their lives.

Empowering Women Through Financial Independence

The campaign is more than just a call for awareness—it’s a practical guide for women to reclaim their financial freedom. Key takeaways include:

  • Open a private bank account: Establish financial autonomy.
  • Build an emergency fund: Save to create a safety net.
  • Protect your documents: Secure access to your ID, bank cards, and financial records.
  • Seek support: Partner with organizations like People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA).
Partnership with POWA

Nedbank’s collaboration with POWA enhances the campaign’s impact, connecting survivors with essential resources, including shelters, counseling, and legal advice.

Fatima Shaik, executive director of POWA said, “Financial abuse is a silent epidemic that keeps countless women trapped in abusive relationships, stripping them of the financial freedom needed to break free. At POWA, we witness the devastating impact of this form of control every day. By partnering with Nedbank, we aim to shed light on this hidden crisis, provide essential support to survivors, and empower women to rebuild their independence.”

A Trending Call to Action

The campaign’s focus on financial abuse resonated deeply with online audiences, sparking meaningful conversations about financial independence as a lifeline for victims. Nedbank has redefined its role, proving that banks can be powerful allies in addressing societal challenges. This initiative is not just about money—it’s about restoring hope, dignity, and the power to choose a better future.
