African Bank Names Nomfundo Makhubu Retail Marketing Head

African Bank has officially welcomed Nomfundo Makhubu as the new Head of Marketing (Retail/Personal Banking), a strategic appointment that reinforces the Bank’s commitment to delivering impactful, customer-centric marketing in one of its fastest-growing segments.

A Proven Brand Leader

Nomfundo is no stranger to building brands that connect with people. Over the past 15+ years, she’s honed her expertise in strategic communications, corporate storytelling, and digital marketing across some of South Africa’s most recognisable organisations.

In her most recent role as Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank, she led high-impact, data-driven campaigns that elevated the bank’s brand visibility while deepening customer engagement. Before that, she made her mark at FNB South Africa and Vodacom, where she championed personalised client communication strategies and innovative marketing initiatives that delivered measurable results.

Nomfundo holds a BA in Communications Management from Vega School, specialising in Creative Brand Communications, a qualification that underpins her ability to merge creativity with business strategy — ensuring marketing campaigns are not just visually appealing, but also commercially effective.

“African Bank’s customer-first vision really speaks to my passion for creating marketing that makes a difference. This is about more than just campaigns — it’s about building a brand experience that connects emotionally and practically with our customers’ everyday lives.”

African Bank’s Group Executive for Marketing and Customer Experience described her appointment as a game-changer:

“Nomfundo’s track record and leadership style perfectly align with our vision to be a trusted, innovative, and inclusive financial partner. Her expertise will be key in shaping strategies that not only strengthen our brand but also bring real value to our customers.”

Positioning African Bank for Growth

African Bank has been actively evolving its brand identity and marketing approach to better serve retail and personal banking customers. Nomfundo’s appointment comes at a time when the bank is investing in digital innovation, customer insights, and personalised engagement to meet the changing needs of South Africans.

Her experience in developing data-led, creative campaigns will be instrumental in positioning African Bank as more than just a financial institution — but as a trusted partner in helping customers achieve their financial goals.

With Nomfundo at the helm of retail and personal banking marketing, African Bank is set to deliver bolder, more innovative campaigns that speak directly to the people it serves, bridging the gap between brand promise and customer experience.
