Woolworths W.Chef Brings AI Meal Planning to Customers

Woolworths W.Chef has entered live customer testing, giving a first group of shoppers access to an AI food assistant through the Woolies app. Announced on 8 October 2026, the move brings personalised meal inspiration closer to the grocery basket.

The assistant helps customers decide what to cook based on their preferences, dietary requirements and occasions. It also connects those suggestions to ingredient shopping, bringing a familiar daily challenge into Woolworths’ digital retail experience.

For the brand, the opportunity lies in helping customers before they begin searching for individual products.

How Woolworths W.Chef works

Woolworths W.Chef draws on more than 20 years of recipes from Woolworths Taste. Customers can use food-related prompts to receive meal suggestions suited to what they want to eat.

Someone looking for a quick weekday dinner, for example, could ask for ideas that match their available time and dietary preferences. The assistant can also suggest wine pairings and allow shoppers to add multiple ingredients to their basket through a single prompt.

Its connection to Woolies Dash links recipe discovery with grocery purchasing. Customers can move from choosing a meal to shopping for its ingredients within the retailer’s digital environment.

That connection could make meal planning more convenient by reducing the steps between finding inspiration and placing an order.

Why the customer testing phase matters

The live beta marks the first time W.Chef is being used outside Woolworths’ internal environment. It gives the retailer a chance to understand how customers interact with the assistant during everyday shopping.

Woolworths plans to use feedback and usage insights to refine the experience before expanding access in the coming months.

This distinction matters: W.Chef is currently being tested with an initial customer group. The announcement does not mean every Woolies app user already has access.

The testing phase will help Woolworths assess whether the assistant’s suggestions are useful and whether its shopping features make the experience easier.

Bringing food expertise into the app

W.Chef combines Woolworths’ recipe content with a new way for customers to discover it.

Instead of browsing a collection of recipes, shoppers can describe what they need and receive personalised inspiration. This gives the retailer’s existing food content another role within its customer experience.

Sam Ngumeni, group CEO of Woolworths, positioned the assistant as part of the business’s focus on food and its efforts to use digital capabilities to deliver greater customer value.

From a brand perspective, the approach could strengthen the connection between Woolworths’ food expertise and its online shopping services. The retailer becomes involved in the meal decision as well as the ingredient purchase.

Microsoft supports Woolworths W.Chef

W.Chef was developed with support from Microsoft and is built on Microsoft Azure.

The partnership places artificial intelligence within a practical consumer activity: deciding what to eat and buying the ingredients needed to prepare it.

For customers, the value will depend on how well the assistant responds to their requests. Relevant recipes, clear suggestions and a straightforward shopping experience will matter more than the technology behind them.

For Woolworths, customer testing provides an opportunity to improve those details before a wider rollout.

What this means for retail brands

Our reading of the development is that W.Chef gives Woolworths an opportunity to become part of customers’ meal-planning routines.

A useful assistant could encourage shoppers to return to the app whenever they need food inspiration. However, stronger engagement and increased sales remain potential outcomes, rather than results established by this announcement.

Woolworths’ longer-term ambition is for W.Chef to become a personal food companion that supports weekly meal planning, nutrition and budgeting. Those ambitions extend beyond the current testing phase.

For now, the central question is whether the assistant makes an everyday task easier enough for customers to keep using it.

Woolworths W.Chef builds on a development previously explored in Pat on Brands’ article on AI becoming the new personal shopper for retail brands. For details on the current testing phase, read Woolworths’ official W.Chef announcement.
