WesBank has announced the appointment of Robert Gwerengwe as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 September 2025. A seasoned leader with more than 19 years of experience within the Group, Gwerengwe steps into the role with a strong track record of leadership, innovation, and customer-centric strategy.
A Successor with Proven Experience
Gwerengwe takes over from Ghana Msibi, who was recently appointed as FNB Business CEO. His appointment reflects WesBank’s ongoing commitment to grooming and elevating talent within the Group to lead its businesses into the future.
Previously, Gwerengwe served as the CEO of Direct Axis and FNB’s Personal Sub Segment cluster. He has also held key executive roles across FNB Retail Banking, Direct Axis, and MotoNovo in the UK, where he was instrumental in driving financial performance, strategic growth, and customer-focused innovations.
Leading South Africa’s Asset Finance Leader
As South Africa’s leading asset-based finance provider with over 40 years of excellence, WesBank continues to cement its leadership in vehicle and business finance. The bank’s strong partnerships, point-of-sale motor financing, and integration with the FNB platform have ensured a seamless experience for both retail and commercial customers.
In his new role, Gwerengwe will focus on driving strategic growth, ensuring WesBank maintains its market leadership while adapting to the evolving needs of the automotive and finance sectors.

Academic Excellence
Gwerengwe holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Quantic, a BCom in Finance and Computer Science from Rhodes University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the University of Cape Town.
