Thembalethu Msibi to Lead 2026 iPendoring Jury as Indigenous-Language Creativity Takes Centre Stage

The iPendoring Awards has appointed Thembalethu Msibi, Co-Founder and Creative Partner of BlackSwan, as Jury President for its 2026 awards programme, placing an experienced South African creative leader at the helm of judging as the awards continue to champion indigenous-language advertising and culturally rooted communication.

Msibi will lead the adjudication process for the 2026 iPendoring Awards, with formal judging taking place in Johannesburg on 3 and 4 September 2026. Entries remain open until 28 August 2026, ahead of the awards ceremony in November.

What you need to know

Msibi brings nearly two decades of experience across advertising, brand design, integrated campaigns, sponsorship and live activations.

Through BlackSwan, she has worked on campaigns for brands including Telkom, KFC, Absa, Clicks, South African Airways and the Joburg Film Festival.

She has also previously judged the Loeries, iPendoring and Effie Awards, and has held industry leadership positions including membership of the Creative Circle EXCO and the ABInBev Braintrust.

Her appointment comes as iPendoring continues to position indigenous languages and cultural understanding as important sources of creative effectiveness rather than simply additional layers of localisation.

Why Thembalethu Msibi’s appointment matters

Advertising in indigenous languages is often discussed in terms of translation.

But the creative challenge goes much deeper.

Language carries humour, social context, cultural references, emotion and ways of seeing the world that can easily be lost when an idea is first developed in one language and simply converted into another.

This is the distinction Msibi believes strong creative work needs to understand.

“The strongest creative work understands people beyond the brief. When communication is shaped by lived experience, it becomes more honest, more nuanced and more powerful,” says Msibi.

She adds that iPendoring has an important role to play in recognising work that is not merely translated into indigenous languages, but conceived and experienced through those languages from the beginning.

That philosophy puts cultural insight at the centre of creativity rather than treating it as an adaptation that happens once the main campaign idea has already been developed.

Indigenous languages as a source of creative power

For South African marketers, language can be one of the strongest tools for creating relevance.

The country’s linguistic and cultural diversity gives brands an opportunity to communicate with audiences in ways that feel familiar, authentic and rooted in lived experience.

iPendoring has built its awards platform around recognising this kind of work.

Rather than positioning culturally specific advertising as a niche area of the creative industry, the awards celebrate communication in which language, identity and cultural context are fundamental to the strength of the idea.

iPendoring General Manager Eben Keun says Msibi’s understanding of this relationship between culture and communication made her a strong choice to lead the 2026 jury.

“Thembalethu brings a fresh perspective to this year’s adjudication and is a natural fit to lead the jury. She understands that language carries culture, context and connection, which is exactly what iPendoring exists to celebrate.”

Who is Thembalethu Msibi?

Msibi is the Co-Founder and Creative Partner of BlackSwan, an independent South African creative business.

Her career spans close to two decades and includes work across through-the-line campaigns, brand design, activations and sponsorship.

Her portfolio includes work for some of South Africa’s most recognised brands and organisations, including Telkom, KFC, Absa, Clicks, South African Airways and the Joburg Film Festival.

Beyond her agency work, Msibi has contributed to the broader creative industry as a judge and industry leader.

Her previous judging experience includes the Loeries, Effie Awards and iPendoring, while her leadership experience has included serving on the Creative Circle EXCO and the ABInBev Braintrust.

That combination of creative, strategic and industry experience will now inform how she leads the 2026 iPendoring jury.

What will the 2026 iPendoring jury be looking for?

The 2026 judging panel brings together creatives, writers, designers, strategists and storytellers from across South Africa’s advertising and communications industry.

At the heart of the judging will be a question that is becoming increasingly important for brands:

Does the work genuinely understand the people it is speaking to?

For indigenous-language communication in particular, effectiveness cannot only be judged by whether the words are technically correct.

Context matters.

Cultural understanding matters.

Tone matters.

And the strongest work is often created when these elements are embedded in the original idea.

That is the standard Msibi’s comments suggest will be important during this year’s adjudication.

What iPendoring represents for South African advertising

iPendoring remains one of the country’s dedicated platforms for recognising excellence in indigenous-language advertising and communication.

Its relevance extends beyond awards.

It represents a broader argument about the future of South African creativity: that local language and cultural specificity do not limit the reach of an idea — they can strengthen it.

As brands compete for attention in an increasingly fragmented media environment, culturally intelligent communication can create a level of familiarity and emotional connection that generic messaging struggles to achieve.

For agencies and marketers, this means indigenous-language creativity should not necessarily begin with the question:

“How do we translate this campaign?”

A more powerful question may be:

“What idea would we create if we started with this audience, this culture and this language?”

That distinction sits at the heart of what iPendoring continues to advocate.

Key dates for the 2026 iPendoring Awards

Entries for the 2026 iPendoring Awards close on 28 August 2026.

Formal judging will take place in Johannesburg on 3 and 4 September 2026, with the awards ceremony scheduled for November 2026.

As this year’s programme enters its final entry period, Msibi’s appointment reinforces the central idea behind iPendoring’s #SayMo platform: some of South Africa’s most powerful creative ideas are the ones that understand not only how people speak, but how they think, feel and experience the world.

And increasingly, that makes indigenous-language creativity not simply a matter of representation — but a source of competitive creative advantage.
