South Africa’s marketing industry is clearly shifting, with effectiveness now taking center stage over pure creativity as the real measure of success.
This is evident in the 2026 Effie Awards South Africa, which saw entries surpass last year’s record-breaking numbers. The event recorded a 29% increase in submissions, reflecting growing participation from agencies, clients, and specialist partners across the country.
The growth reflects an industry that is becoming increasingly focused on measurable business results rather than simply producing memorable campaigns.
Hosted by the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA), the Effie Awards remain the world’s leading benchmark for marketing effectiveness, recognising campaigns that successfully combine strategic thinking, creativity and commercial impact.
This year, 45 campaigns have progressed to the finalist stage, putting some of South Africa’s biggest brands and agencies one step closer to marketing’s highest honour.
Why the Effie Awards Matter
Unlike many advertising awards that primarily celebrate creative execution, the Effies reward something far more difficult to achieve.
Every campaign is evaluated on whether it solved a genuine business challenge, delivered against clearly defined objectives and generated measurable outcomes.
Becoming an Effie finalist therefore represents far more than industry recognition. It signals that a campaign has successfully demonstrated the kind of strategic discipline that modern marketing increasingly demands.

As Gillian Rightford, ACA Executive Director for Effie South Africa, explains: “Finalist status at Effie means the work has stood up to a process that interrogates not only the idea, but the challenge, the strategy, how the idea was brought to life and the results achieved.”
She added that the record number of entries reflects how seriously the industry is taking effectiveness. “These finalists represent the cases that have shown the discipline, ambition and evidence required to compete at the highest level.”
Marketing Is Being Measured Differently
According to the Effie Awards judging criteria, campaigns are evaluated across four core pillars:
- The business challenge and objectives
- Strategic insight
- Creative execution
- Proven result
The continued growth of the Effie Awards reflects a broader transformation taking place across the marketing industry.
Being named an Effie finalist means more than just recognition in the local awards program. Each finalist also earns points toward the global Effie Index, one of the most respected rankings for marketing effectiveness worldwide.
This offers both agencies and client brands global recognition while highlighting South African marketing on an international platform. It also strengthens the country’s reputation for creating campaigns that can stand alongside some of the world’s best strategic marketing efforts.
South African brands continue to lead the way

A clear trend among this year’s finalists is the rise of campaigns centered on making a social impact.
Several shortlisted campaigns address gender-based violence, child protection, animal welfare, heart health and food insecurity.
Examples include:
- Vodacom Foundation’s campaign addressing gender-based violence
- Women For Change’s The Unburied Casket
- NSPCA’s Rein In The Pain
- KFC Africa’s Add Hope
- The Salvation Army’s Escape It
Unlike typical corporate social responsibility initiatives, these campaigns stand out by delivering tangible outcomes and making a real difference in society.
The Competition Isn’t Over Yet
The 45 finalists will now progress to the second round of judging, where campaigns will compete for Bronze, Silver and Gold Effie Awards.

The top-performing campaign will be in the running for the prestigious Grand Effie, given to the most effective piece of marketing communication in the competition.
Round Two judging is set for 13 August 2026, with the Grand Effie adjudication on 10 September. The winners will be announced at the 2026 Effie Awards South Africa Gala on 20 October 2026.
What Brands Can Learn
Looking across this year’s finalists reveals several common characteristics.
Successful brands are:
- Solving genuine consumer problems rather than creating marketing for its own sake.
- Combining creativity with clear commercial objectives.
- Using data to guide strategy and measure impact.
- Building long-term brand platforms instead of relying on one-off campaigns.
- Integrating purpose into business outcomes rather than treating it as a separate initiative.
