SAHPRA Recalls Citro‑Soda: Consumer Safety Alert

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has recalled specified batches of Citro‑Soda Regular following the discovery of metal fragments and unknown particles during production at the Adcock Ingram Clayville facility.

While Citro‑Soda is a familiar household product, this recall highlights how even trusted brands must maintain rigorous quality controls to protect consumers and their reputation.

What Went Wrong

SAHPRA Inspectorate and Regulatory Compliance Head, Lebohang Mazibuko, explained:

“We found presence of metal fragments from the manufacturer equipment and some unknown black particles from those manufacturing equipment. So, those metal fragments were from the manufacturing vessels that are used to manufacture this product. Hence we say you cannot consume a metal and be well after that.”

In addition, all Citro‑Soda products with batch numbers starting with the letter ‘C’ have been recalled. This ensures potentially affected items are removed from shelves, demonstrating SAHPRA’s proactive approach to consumer safety and regulatory compliance.

What Consumers Should Do

SAHPRA advises:

  • Check your Citro‑Soda products for batch numbers starting with ‘C’
  • Do not consume affected products
  • Return products to the place of purchase for replacement or refund
  • Seek medical attention if you experience unusual symptoms

This clear guidance shows how regulators and brands must communicate decisively when public safety is at stake.

Why This Matters

The recall goes beyond the product itself. It’s a reminder that brand trust, safety, and integrity are inseparable.

For marketers and business leaders, the lesson is clear:
Building resilient brands means putting consumer safety first, every time.

Even during challenging situations like product recalls, brands that act responsibly and communicate openly emerge stronger and more respected.
