Kia South Africa Issues Urgent Recall for ABS Fuse Replacement

Kia South Africa has announced an urgent recall affecting 18 600 vehicles sold between 2009 and 2015. The recall is linked to a potentially dangerous defect in the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) fuse. Owners are being urged to take their vehicles in for inspection before travelling for the holidays, as the faulty fuse may compromise braking safety.

How the Faulty Fuse Affects Drivers

According to information received by the National Consumer Commission (NCC), the affected fuse may lead to ABS malfunction, resulting in reduced braking effectiveness and longer stopping distances. In extreme cases, the defect could cause damage in the engine bay, increasing the risk of serious mechanical failure. This poses a significant danger, especially during emergency braking or on wet and slippery roads.

“Consumers who are affected by these recalls are urged to take these recalls seriously and arrange for the necessary inspections and repairs at any authorised dealership without delay to ensure their safety. The necessary repair work will be carried out at no cost to the consumer,” the NCC said.

Models Included in the Recall

The recall affects several popular Kia models sold in South Africa during the six-year period. These include:

  • Kia Sportage

  • Kia Sorento

  • Kia Cerato

  • Kia Soul

  • Kia Optima

Owners are advised to contact their nearest dealership and verify their vehicle’s status using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Repairs Are Free for All Affected Owners

Kia has confirmed that all inspections, fuse replacements, and safety checks will be carried out free of charge at authorised dealerships. The company is urging owners not to delay, particularly with festive-season travel approaching. Should drivers notice ABS warning lights or any unusual braking behaviour, they are advised to avoid driving the vehicle until it has been examined by a professional.

A Part of Broader Safety Actions in SA

This Kia recall forms part of a broader set of safety notices recently announced in South Africa. The NCC has highlighted the growing importance of timely responses to vehicle recalls to ensure public safety. Kia assures consumers that the repair process will be swift and essential in preventing potential accidents during this busy travel season.
