JAECOO J5 Confirmed for South African Production

OMODA & JAECOO South Africa has recently confirmed that the JAECOO J5 will form part of the core production line-up at Chery Group’s first South African manufacturing plant, following the official groundbreaking of the facility.

The announcement marks a significant milestone in OMODA & JAECOO’s local expansion strategy, with the JAECOO J5 set to play a central role in the brand’s long-term plans for the South African market. Since launching locally in September 2025, the crossover has quickly established itself as one of the brand’s key models.

Built for South African Drivers

The JAECOO J5 will be manufactured in South Africa in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and new energy vehicle (NEV) variants. This will provide local customers with a wider choice of powertrains while reinforcing the model’s importance within OMODA & JAECOO’s local product portfolio.

For the company, local production reflects growing confidence in the South African market and a commitment to offering vehicles that meet local driving conditions, customer preferences and ownership requirements.

“The JAECOO J5 speaks directly to the needs of South African motorists,” says Hans Greyling, General Manager for OMODA & JAECOO and iCAUR South Africa. “It offers the practicality, technology and versatility customers expect from a modern crossover, while the addition of NEV models gives buyers more choice as the market continues to evolve.”

Strong Sales Momentum in South Africa

JAECOO J5

Since arriving in South Africa in September 2025, the JAECOO J5 has recorded 2,630 sales, demonstrating strong early demand and growing consumer confidence in the model.

The vehicle’s local success aligns with OMODA & JAECOO’s strategy to strengthen its presence through locally produced vehicles tailored to the South African market.

Global Sales Momentum Continues

Beyond South Africa, the JAECOO J5 has delivered strong sales performance and positive customer feedback across several international markets.

In Thailand, the JAECOO J5 BEV-led SUV registrations for six consecutive months, from November 2025 to April 2026.

The model has also performed strongly in Indonesia, where nearly 14,000 units were sold between January and May 2026, making it the country’s leading battery electric SUV. In May alone, it ranked among Indonesia’s five best-selling vehicles while securing the top position in electric vehicle sales.

The momentum continued in Australia, where the JAECOO J5 BEV became the country’s second best-selling electric vehicle in May 2026, further highlighting the model’s growing global appeal.
