Sydney Mbhele Honoured for Brand Leadership Excellence

Brand Africa Honours Sydney Mbhele

Sydney Mbhele, the Group Chief Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer at Absa Group Limited, was recently honoured with the Africa Brand Leadership Excellence Award by Brand Africa. This prestigious accolade recognizes his outstanding contribution to building powerful African brands and mentoring a new generation of marketing leaders.

Championing African Excellence Through Brand Leadership

With over 20 years of experience in brand strategy, corporate communications, and reputation management, Mbhele has consistently demonstrated an ability to merge strategic insight with disciplined execution, delivering both brand and business growth. His leadership has shaped the identity of numerous South African brands, successfully expanding their reach across the continent while fostering stronger stakeholder relationships.

Under his guidance, Absa’s transformation from Barclays Africa into a bold, purpose driven African brand became a knowledge base in cultural authenticity and brand reinvention. This shift was not about renaming a bank, but about reimagining its role as a homegrown financial institution serving the African continent with relevance and pride.

Acclamation and Influence: Sydney Mbhele’s Strategic Marketing Journey

Before joining Absa, Mbhele held senior and executive roles at prominent global and multi-territory companies including Unilever, SABMiller, Nedbank, and Sanlam. In each of these roles, he led strategic marketing and corporate affairs initiatives that maximized brand equity and organizational value.

In 2023, Mbhele was named one of the top two marketers in South Africa, and in 2021, he ranked among the top five chief marketing officers across Africa and the Middle East in the renowned Scopen Survey. These distinctions reflect his influential role in shaping the branding landscape across the region.

Beyond the boardroom, Sydney Mbhele is deeply committed to social impact. As the co-founder and chairperson of “Mentor A Boy Child”, a non-profit organisation, he helps guide young boys toward becoming responsible, respectful men, a mission rooted in his belief that we each have a duty to leave the world better than we found it.

Crafting Legacy Through Purpose

Sydney Mbhele’s story is more than a tale of corporate achievement, it is a testament to the transformative power of purpose driven leadership. In every role he has taken, he has proven that building brands is not just about business, but about shaping culture, unlocking human potential, and inspiring collective progress.

In honoring his craft, we are reminded that true leadership lies in using influence to uplift others, in turning success into significance and in leaving a legacy that echoes far beyond the boardroom. For every young African with a vision, Sydney Mbhele stands as proof that excellence rooted in authenticity can change the narrative, and the continent.  He not only is a recognized brand leader but also a visionary committed to advancing African documentation, inspiring the next generation, using business as a force for good.
