Apple iPhone 18 launch and new iPhone models expected in 2026

Apple Is Skipping the iPhone 18 Launch This Year

Apple is changing its traditional iPhone release strategy, with the standard iPhone 18 reportedly being held back until 2027 while the company’s more expensive new models launch this September.

For years, Apple has followed a familiar formula: introduce the latest standard iPhone alongside the Pro and Pro Max models in September.

That is set to change with the iPhone lineup.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a new foldable iPhone in September 2026, while the standard iPhone is expected to arrive in spring 2027.

The change could mark one of Apple’s biggest adjustments to its iPhone launch strategy in years.

Why the iPhone 18 Is Being Delayed

The latest indication came from Apple supplier Pegatron, following its second-quarter 2026 earnings call.

According to reporting cited by MacRumors, Pegatron indicated that one of its smartphone customers would be changing its usual shipment schedule. The report linked the change to Apple’s expected decision to move the standard iPhone launch into the first quarter of 2027.

The development follows months of reports suggesting that Apple would split its next-generation iPhone lineup across two launch periods.

Apple supplier Largan Precision had previously provided another indication that a major US customer had postponed the launch of a new smartphone model until the first quarter of 2027.

Apple has not traditionally separated its standard and Pro iPhone launches in this way, making the reported change particularly significant.

iPhone 18 Pro Models Will Arrive First

While the standard iPhone is being pushed into 2027, Apple is expected to continue with its premium iPhone launches this September.

The first wave is expected to include:

  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • Foldable iPhone, reportedly called iPhone Ultra

Apple has officially scheduled its iPhone-focused event for September 9, 2026, at Apple Park in Cupertino. Current reporting indicates that these three higher-end models will be the focus of the event.

That means consumers looking for Apple’s newest standard iPhone will have to wait considerably longer than those interested in the company’s premium models.

The Standard iPhone 18 Could Arrive in Spring 2027

The standard iPhone is currently expected to launch in spring 2027.

MacRumors’ current roundup lists the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e among the models expected for spring 2027, alongside a second-generation iPhone Air.

This would represent a major departure from the recent iPhone launch cycle.

From the iPhone 11 through the iPhone 17 generation, Apple’s standard models launched alongside the Pro versions in September. Moving the standard iPhone to the following spring therefore creates a much clearer separation between Apple’s premium and more affordable models.

Apple Could Have Six New iPhones Across Two Launches

Rather than introducing the entire iPhone(18) family at once, Apple is expected to spread the lineup across two periods.

If the current reports are accurate, Apple could therefore have six new iPhone models arriving across the two launch windows.

What the Split Launch Means for iPhone Buyers

The new strategy could give Apple a very different product cycle.

Consumers who want the latest premium technology will have an opportunity to upgrade in September, while shoppers looking for the standard iPhone will have to wait until 2027.

That could also make the September event more heavily focused on Apple’s most expensive devices.

For customers who do not need a Pro or foldable model, however, the delay means the iPhone 17 remains Apple’s latest standard-generation option until the iPhone 18 arrives.

MacRumors has previously noted that the iPhone 17 remains a strong option for customers deciding whether to buy now or wait for the delayed iPhone.

Apple’s New iPhone Strategy Could Change the Upgrade Cycle

The decision to split the lineup could have implications beyond 2026.

Instead of encouraging consumers to consider an entirely new iPhone family every September, Apple would effectively create two major upgrade windows.

The premium models would receive their annual spotlight in the second half of the year, while the standard and lower-priced models would follow several months later.

That could allow Apple to give its highest-end products more attention during its traditional September event while creating another major product moment in early 2027.

What About the iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2?

The standard iPhone 18 will reportedly not be the only model delayed until next year.

Apple is also expected to introduce a lower-end iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air around spring 2027.

This means the spring launch could become a significant event of its own rather than simply being a delayed release for one model.

The strategy would give Apple an opportunity to refresh several parts of its iPhone range during the first half of the year.

The  Launch Will Look Very Different

Apple’s decision to split the iPhone lineup represents a major change from the company’s recent launch formula.

Instead of unveiling the standard model alongside the Pro versions in September, Apple is expected to put its most expensive devices first and wait until spring 2027 for the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2.

For consumers, the message is relatively simple: there will be no standard iPhone 18 available during Apple’s September 2026 launch.

Those wanting the latest premium iPhone will have options in September, while customers specifically waiting for the standard iPhone 18 will need to wait until 2027.

Apple’s September 9 event should provide the clearest look yet at the company’s new strategy and the products it plans to bring to market first.

What do you think about Apple’s new iPhone launch strategy? Would you wait for the standard iPhone or choose one of the models launching in September?
