Starbucks coffee will soon be available at select Checkers stores

Supermarket giant, Checkers, has announced a new joint venture with coffee house, Starbucks. In December 2020, Starbucks will launch outlets in selected Checkers stores. Shoppers can enjoy a selection of unique Starbucks beverages to suit their needs. The coffee house will open at the new Checkers FreshX supermarkets in Rosebank, Johannesburg and Stellenbosch.

Checkers FreshX concept store

Checkers introduced the first FreshX concept store in 2017 at the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg. The aim of the store was to attract a more affluent South African market and has since seen much success. The FreshX stores have unique features to the traditional Checkers supermarket. Including, contemporary furniture and branding. The stores incorporate sushi bars, chocolate counters, walk-in wine cellars. It boasts a wide range of local and international wine brands, gourmet breads, and cheese.

Starbucks Expansion

The Starbucks AT Home coffee bean and capsule range is already available from Checkers stores. The retailer says that the partnership with Starbucks will ensure that premium coffee beverages are made available to the every-day shopper. The Starbucks experience will be made more accessible to thousands of consumers through their increased retail footprint.
Starbucks, under its new management, is gearing up to expand its own footprint in South Africa by opening 8 new stores. In November 2020, the coffee company announced plans to launch the 8 new stores by 2021.
Stores are set to open in Canal Walk, Cavendish Square, Stellenbosch, Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, the V&A Waterfront, and Camps Bay. The project will kick off on Thursday, 19 November 2020.
