FNB Crypto Trading Launches From R10 With VALR

FNB crypto trading is now available through the bank’s investment platform, allowing South African customers to buy selected digital assets from as little as R10. The service, launched in partnership with local cryptocurrency platform VALR, brings crypto investing into the FNB banking app.

Customers can access five digital assets through the offering: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and USDT. However, the service comes with a key restriction: customers cannot transfer cryptocurrency into or out of the platform.

The launch expands FNB’s investment offering while giving customers another reason to use its app beyond everyday banking.

FNB crypto trading starts from R10

The R10 minimum lowers the amount customers need to begin investing in the available digital assets. It allows users to buy a small holding without purchasing a whole Bitcoin or another complete unit of cryptocurrency.

Customers can buy, hold and sell supported assets through FNB’s existing share-investing products. These include Shares Zero, Share Investor, Share Saver and Share Builder.

Trading is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This gives customers access outside conventional stock-market hours, including evenings and weekends.

However, a low entry amount does not remove investment risk. Cryptocurrency prices can change sharply, and customers can lose money when the value of their holdings falls.

Which assets are available?

FNB’s initial offering provides access to:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • XRP
  • Solana (SOL)
  • Tether (USDT)

USDT is a stablecoin designed to track the US dollar. Its purpose differs from cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, although the term “stablecoin” should not be understood as a guarantee against losses.

The initial selection gives customers a limited range of assets to explore. FNB has also indicated that it plans to expand the available range over time and provide educational material about cryptocurrency and its risks.

How to access FNB crypto trading

According to FNB’s cryptocurrency product page, customers can find the investment offering through these steps:

  1. Log in to the FNB App.
  2. Select Product Shop, followed by For Me and View all products.
  3. Under Invest, select Invest in Shares, Gold & Crypto.
  4. Choose from the listed share-investing solutions.

Customers should review the relevant product information, charges and terms before making a purchase. The R10 starting amount describes the minimum investment; it does not mean that every transaction or account is free of charges.

Crypto stays inside the FNB platform

FNB crypto trading operates within a ring-fenced environment. Customers use funds held in their FNB accounts to make purchases, while the digital assets remain inside the platform.

This means users cannot deposit cryptocurrency from an external wallet or send their holdings to another exchange or personal wallet.

FNB says the structure supports tighter control over security, compliance and exchange-control requirements. For customers, the practical distinction is clear: the service provides a way to invest in selected cryptocurrencies within FNB’s system, with external transfers restricted.

Understanding that limitation matters before choosing where to buy and hold digital assets.

What the launch means for FNB’s brand

From a brand perspective, the launch extends the role of the FNB app. Customers can now encounter another investment category within an interface they already use for payments, account management and other financial services.

That could make cryptocurrency feel more accessible to people who have been hesitant to explore a separate trading platform. The R10 starting amount also gives the offering a simple message that customers can quickly understand.

However, familiarity with a banking brand does not make cryptocurrency prices predictable. Clear communication about fees, volatility and transfer restrictions will remain central to the customer experience.

The partnership also illustrates how banks and fintech businesses can combine their capabilities. FNB supplies the customer-facing banking environment, while VALR supports the cryptocurrency offering.

Access comes with responsibility

FNB crypto trading adds a new option for customers interested in digital assets. Its combination of app access, a R10 starting amount and round-the-clock trading makes the service easy to explain, but customers still need to understand what they are buying.

The offering’s success will depend on more than access alone. Product education and clear explanations of its limits will help customers make informed decisions.
