South Africa’s luxury automotive market is set for another major electric vehicle arrival.
BMW is preparing to expand its luxury electric offering in South Africa with the arrival of the BMW i7 50 xDrive Sedan, bringing together long-range electric driving, premium technology and the comfort expected from BMW’s flagship 7 Series.
The arrival of the i7 50 xDrive comes as the local market continues to see greater interest in premium electric vehicles, with luxury manufacturers increasingly combining electrification with high-end technology and comfort.
A New Electric Flagship
The BMW i7 sits at the top of BMW’s luxury sedan line-up, offering a fully electric alternative to the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the 7 Series.

The new i7 50 xDrive Sedan is positioned around a combination of performance and long-distance usability. BMW lists a provisional WLTP electric range of up to 727km, although the final certified figures may differ.
BMW says the model can also add up to 235km of WLTP range after 10 minutes of charging, under the specified conditions.
Performance Meets Electric Power

The BMW i7 50 xDrive is powered by an all-electric powertrain producing 400kW, equivalent to 544hp, with 745Nm of torque.
The all-wheel-drive sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a claimed 4.7 seconds, while its electric top speed is listed at 240km/h.
BMW lists the battery capacity at 112.5kWh net on its South African model page, while the technical data page provides additional specifications for the i7 range.
Luxury Is Still at the Centre
The i7 isn’t positioned simply as an electric performance car. Much of its appeal comes from the technology and comfort built into the cabin.
BMW’s 7 Series platform features technologies including BMW Panoramic iDrive and BMW Operating System X, bringing a more digital approach to the driving and passenger experience.
BMW offers rear passengers the option of a massive 31.3-inch Theatre Screen that drops down from the roof, transforming the back seats into a personal entertainment zone. It’s capable of streaming, gaming, and even handling video calls.
A More Dramatic Design
BMW has given the latest 7 Series a distinctive visual identity, with the i7 retaining the large kidney grille and a more imposing front-end design.
The South African BMW site highlights features such as the optional BMW Individual crystal headlights Iconic Glow and the illuminated kidney grille, while the sedan’s elongated rear lights contribute to its wider, more dynamic stance.
Buyers will also have access to a wide range of exterior finishes, including BMW Individual two-tone colour combinations.
Built for Comfortable Long-Distance Driving
The i7 delivers outstanding performance while still being designed for comfort.

BMW highlights its adaptive two-axle air suspension, which is designed to provide a smoother ride while also making access and loading easier.
The sedan measures more than 5.3 metres in length, reinforcing its position as a large luxury vehicle. The technical specifications list a luggage capacity of 500 litres
What South African Buyers Should Know
BMW South Africa has announced that the BMW i7 50 xDrive Sedan will be available to order from the third quarter of 2026.
The current configurator lists the i7 range starting at R2,953,000, though prices may vary depending on model specifications and optional extras.
