Datsun Go Lux – The most stylish starter car

If there is one car brand that I have a strong affinity to is Datsun. My uncle used to own the 1982 Datsun Stanza SSS 1800. He drove that car for a good 15 years and I can attribute my interest in cars to the Datsun brand.

This past week, I got to spend some time with the Datsun Go Lux and it is what I call “the most stylish starter pack”. The Datsun Lux Go is most suitable for university students and young professionals who have just started working.

The Exterior

The Datsun Go Lux is more than just a point A to B type of a car. It boasts stylish looks with a bold grille, LED daytime running lights and 14 inch Diamond Cut Alloy wheels. It also comes standard with coloured electric side mirrors.

The Interior

The new Datsun GO Lux comes standard with a trendy 7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that becomes an extension of your smartphone through Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity. It allows users to navigate, make calls, send and receive messages, and enjoy music in a way that is safer than taking your eyes off the road to try and use your phone in traffic. It is also equipped with Bluetooth and USB connections.

All the windows of the Datsun Go are power controlled, offering convenience for everyone inside the car.

The Drive

I took the car on a long distance drive to Mpumalanga from Johannesburg – about 200 Kilometres and I was impressed with its performance. When you put the foot on the accelerator, the car goes and it is stable on the road. The speed-sensitive electric steering calculated how much assistance to give based on how fast I was going. At high speed it offered firm steering whilst at low speed it light steering.

The anti-fatigue seats offered more comfort.

Performance and fuel consumption

The Datsun Go is powered by an energetic 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 50kW at 5,000rpm and 104Nm at 4,000rpm paired with a smooth 5-speed manual transmission.

When it comes to fuel consumption the Datsun GO sips. It has an impressive fuel efficiency of the 1.2-litre engine, which has a combined consumption of 5.2 litres per 100km. This means that, with today’s fuel prices it should cost you around R14-R15 to drive nearly 20 Kilometres

In conclusion, here are the Pats and Slaps of the Datsun Go Lux:

Pats

  • It is affordable. The price starts at R149,600 and consumers will receive one-year insurance with the purchase.
  • It sips on petrol which is important in these times of high fuel cost.
  • The Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity is a cool feature
  • It is a stylish looking car, especially the 14 inch Diamond Cut Alloy wheels
  • The reverse parking assist is good for first-time car buyers.

Slaps

  • The Datsun Go does not have steering wheel controls.
  • The position of the gear makes you feel like you are driving a minibus or truck.
