2022 SAFTA Awards: Winners List

The past weekend was a victorious one for many artists and those behind the scenes at the South African Film and Television award ceremony held over two nights, 2nd -3rd September 2022. The first night was held virtually and hosted by Candice Modiselle and Smash Afrika, streaming on YouTube and the main event was hosted by comedian Mpho Popps joined by Ryle De Morny and Khutso Thaledi was screened live on Mzansi Magic and SABC 3.

Two of South Africa’s largest media groups went head-to-head for the ceremony’s big prizes, Multichoice and SABC were ready for action as the first segment of the awards took place. Multichoice led the race this year with most of their shows nominated in the different categories and an overall win of 54 awards across both evenings with Showmax adding to the total with 17 awards, the SABC managed to win 9 awards and E.tv scooping overall 11 awards.

Netflix stepped up with a win of 7 awards of which one was won by actress and mental health activist Nomvelo Makhanya for best-supporting actress in the Netflix original film “I Am All Girls”, the award being her first ever marking a huge milestone of her career.

The “Frame the Future” themed ceremony covered the Craft Awards where E.tv soap House of Zwide scooped 4 awards followed by Mzansi Magic Diep City with 3 awards and the public got the opportunity to vote in the Public Vote categories where Tembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo won the “Best TV Presenter” award and DiepCity voted as the Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela.

The accolade for the Lifetime Achievement Award went to the legendary Connie Chiume for her 45 years of dedication to the South African television industry and broader global film industry.
